Internal Medicine Meeting 2015 breaks records

This issue wraps up coverage of the Internal Medicine Meeting 2015 from Boston.

The record-breaking number of clinicians who traveled to Boston in late April/early May to attend Internal Medicine Meeting 2015 were able to enjoy a rousing keynote speech from former Senator Tom Daschle, multiple events celebrating ACP's 100th anniversary, and, of course, the high-quality scientific sessions and learning opportunities for which ACP is well known. As always, ACP Internist's staff was on hand to provide daily updates, available online, as well as coverage for this issue, which is dedicated to the meeting.

One story offers an overview of an always complicated topic: opioids for noncancer pain. Molly Feely, MD, FACP, gave a wide-ranging talk at the meeting that discussed when to prescribe opioids, how to do so safely, and how to ensure that your patients are actually benefiting. Another story covers a talk by Gary C. Curhan, MD, ScD, on evaluation and management of kidney stones and addresses some well-worn myths in the process (one example: Severe restriction of dietary calcium is not usually necessary).

Internal Medicine Meeting 2015 coverage continues with stories about thriving as a small practice and practicing good antimicrobial stewardship, a story detailing a roundup of new drugs available for cancer treatment, and tips on managing inpatient cirrhosis, and on managing your time.

In our Perspectives section, ACP's president, Wayne J. Riley, MD, MPH, MBA, MACP, and our Washington columnist, Robert B. Doherty, separately discuss the College's annual Leadership Day, which took place this May, and the priorities members focused on this year now that the sustainable growth rate (SGR) is finally a thing of the past. Our Resident's Corner columnist, Joshua M. Liao, MD, ACP Resident/Fellow Member, discusses ways to maintain the physician-patient relationship in a world of increasing technology.

Finally, I'm proud to announce that ACP Internist has won 2 Gold Awards in the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors' (ASHPE) annual competition: Best Cover Illustration for our September 2014 issue and Best Newsletter overall. We're honored to be recognized as among the best in health care publishing, and we are committed to improving our coverage for our readers. Please let us know how you think we're doing.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Kearney-Strouse
