John J. Hoesing, FACP

John J. Hoesing, FACP, a dedicated clinician, died on December 15, 2009 at the age of 68.

Dr. Hoesing obtained his undergraduate education at Creighton University and received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1967. He completed an internship at Wayne Country General Hospital in Detroit followed by an internal medicine residency at the University of Nebraska.

After residency, he joined a medical practice in Omaha where he remained for the next 38 years. During his career, Dr. Hoesing also served as assistant medical director at Mutual of Omaha, medical director of Immanuel Medical Center's Alcoholism Treatment Center, Eppley Treatment Center at Methodist Midtown and Methodist Richard Young, and clinical associate professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Hoesing became a Fellow of the College in 1982 and served as Governor for Nebraska from 1996-2000. He received the Laureate Award in 2001.

Stephen M. Ayres, FACP

Stephen M. Ayres, FACP, a medical educator and international health activist, died on September 12, 2009.

Dr. Ayres received his undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College in 1951 and earned his medical degree from Cornell University in 1957. After working at hospitals in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Missouri, Dr. Ayres became the dean of the Medical College of Virginia in 1985.

In 1991, Dr. Ayres was appointed to the United States Science Advisory Board of the Environmental Protection Agency. He left his position as dean in 1993 to join the international health program at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Ayres became a Fellow of the College in 1965 and served on the Board of Regents from 1983-1985.
