Truman G. Schnabel, Jr., MACP
Truman G. Schnabel, Jr., MACP, a former president of the College, died on March 10, 2009, at the age of 90.
Dr. Schnabel received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital before doing a fellowship in cardiology at Penn. He also served in the military.
Dr. Schnabel spent more than 50 years as a member of the medical faculty at Penn, practicing at Philadelphia General Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He later served as director of the university's Institute on Aging. He also established the school's first cardiac catheterization unit and co-authored a book for patients.
Dr. Schnabel became a Master of the College in 1975 and served as ACP's president from 1974 to 1975. Dr. Schnabel was also the 1985 Eastern Pennsylvania Laureate Award winner and a Pennsylvania Governor from 1961 to 1967.
Paul E. Epstein, MACP
Paul E. Epstein, MACP, a pulmonologist and former deputy editor of Annals of Internal Medicine, died on March 12, 2009 at the age of 68.
Dr. Epstein earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from Tufts University, before completing a residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago Hospital and a pulmonary fellowship at University of Pennsylvania.
At Penn, he served as a clinical professor and chief of pulmonary medicine for Graduate Hospital and Penn Medicine in Radnor. He was also the founding director of the school's Cardiovascular Pulmonary Training Program. Dr. Epstein particularly specialized in occupational lung disease and served as an expert for the government on these issues.
He served as associate editor of Annals of Internal Medicine from 1977 to 1997 and deputy editor from to 1997 to 2008. He also served as editor-in-chief of MKSAP 12 and 13, and co-editor of MKSAP 14. Dr. Epstein became a Master of the College in 2007 and served as Governor for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Region from 2000-2006. Dr. Epstein was the Laureate winner from the Pennsylvania Chapter in 2004.
Maurice L. Kelley, Jr., FACP
Maurice L. Kelley, Jr., FACP, a gastroenterologist and researcher, died on October 19, 2008, at the age of 84.
Dr. Kelley graduated from medical school at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Kelley became a fellow of the College in 1961 and served as ACP Governor for the New Hampshire Chapter from 1974-1978. Dr. Kelley was the Laureate winner from New Hampshire in 1993.
Maurice M. Burkholder, FACP
Maurice M. Burkholder, FACP, an internist, oncologist and outdoorsman, died on January 13, 2009 at the age of 93.
Dr. Burkholder graduated from Goshen College in 1939 and earned both an M.D. (1943) and an M.S. in Physiological Chemistry (1947) from Northwestern University. He served as medical officer in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 before opening his private practice which he continued for the next 40 years. Dr. Burkholder later completed a senior fellowship in oncology and served as a founder and acting director of the Mountain States Tumor Institute.
Dr. Burkholder became a Fellow of the College in 1959 and served as ACP Governor for the Idaho Chapter in 1972-1973. He was the Laureate winner from Idaho in 1986.
