ACP issues new statement on ethical concerns around organ procurement method

ACP believes that normothermic regional perfusion with controlled donation after circulatory determination of death raises significant concerns and questions about the manner and determination of death.

ACP has issued a statement of concern about the organ procurement protocol known as normothermic regional perfusion with controlled donation after circulatory determination of death (NRP-cDCD). In NRP-cDCD, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, cardiopulmonary bypass, or other technologies are used to restore donor circulation while cerebral blood flow is interrupted.

ACP believes that the NRP-cDCD raises significant ethical concerns and questions, including about the manner and determination of death, which have not been adequately considered.
