CDC recommends change to HPV vaccination schedule
Three doses had previously been recommended, but studies have suggested that 2 doses are just as effective in children who begin vaccination before age 15, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices decided.
Children who begin getting vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) before age 15 need only 2 doses, administered 6 months apart, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices decided on Oct. 19.
Three doses had previously been recommended, but studies have suggested that 2 doses are just as effective in this age group, the committee found. The director of the CDC approved the recommendation, which means it will become an agency guideline on the date it is published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a press release noted. Teenagers who begin the series at ages 15 through 26 should continue to receive 3 doses, the agency said.
