Frank Davidoff, MD, MACP
Frank Davidoff, MD, MACP, a former Editor of Annals of Internal Medicine, died on April 2.
He received his medical degree in 1959 from Columbia University in New York City. After completing his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Dr. Davidoff served as a research associate at the National Heart Institute from 1961 to 1964. He then returned to Mass General for an endocrinology fellowship and was also a researcher and faculty member at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
In 1974, Dr. Davidoff joined the faculty at the newly formed University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Conn., and served in various positions there over the next 13 years, including as chief of the division of general medicine and residency training program.
Dr. Davidoff started his career at ACP in 1987, first as Associate Executive Vice President for Education and then as Senior Vice President for Education after his promotion in 1989. He became Editor of Annals in 1995 and retired as Editor in 2001. After retiring from ACP, he served as Executive Editor at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and joined the editorial board of Quality and Safety in Healthcare. He was Vice President of the Board of Physicians for Human Rights for 12 years and interim CEO from April 2011 through January 2012.
In an In Memoriam piece published April 18 in Annals, Christine Laine, MD, MPH, Editor-in-Chief, described Dr. Davidoff's many contributions to the journal, including the introduction of Annals.org, the institution of regular statistical meetings, and the advent of the “On Being a Patient” section. Dr. Laine wrote, “The person who introduced me to Frank described him as having a marvelous, ever curious, and always open mind and being impossible to dislike. There is no better way to describe Frank Davidoff.”
