The College notes the passing of Michael F. Rein, MD, MACP; William R. Smith, MD, MACP; Cyril (Kim) M. Hetsko, MD, MACP; and Alan Gordon, MD, MACP.
Michael F. Rein, MD, MACP
Michael F. Rein, MD, MACP, died on Dec. 5 at the age of 79.
He served on multiple ACP committees, including the Board of Governors. Dr. Rein was Governor for the Virginia Chapter from 2007 to 2011 and served again as interim Governor from 2011 to 2012.
He graduated in 1969 from Harvard Medical School in Boston, and his training in internal medicine and infectious diseases took place at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va., and the CDC in Atlanta.
In 1975, Dr. Rein joined the faculty of the University of Virginia Medical School, where he practiced until retiring as professor of medicine in 2008. He was also a consultant to the World Health Organization, the NIH, and the CDC.

William R. Smith, MD, MACP
William R. Smith, MD, MACP, died on Nov. 22 at the age of 91.
He was Past President of the American Society of Internal Medicine from 1987 to 1988.
Dr. Smith graduated in 1956 from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. After two years of postgraduate training, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as chief of OB-GYN at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., the city where he later practiced medicine for 30 years after completing residency training in internal medicine.

Cyril (Kim) M. Hetsko, MD, MACP
Cyril (Kim) M. Hetsko, MD, MACP, died on Nov. 14 at the age of 80.
He served as ACP Treasurer from 2002 to 2004 and served on multiple committees with the College, including the Board of Regents.
Dr. Hetsko graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y., and completed his residency in internal medicine at University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, Wisc. For 30 years in Madison, he practiced medicine at Dean Clinic and St. Mary's Hospital.

Alan Gordon, MD, MACP
Alan Gordon, MD, MACP, died on Oct. 27 at the age of 91.
He served as Governor for the Arizona Chapter from 1980 to 1984 and was a member of the Board of Governors.
Following graduation from medical school in 1951 at the University of Illinois, Dr. Gordon moved on to a medical internship at Cook County Hospital. While in medical school, he committed to the U.S. Navy and enlisted in 1956. Dr. Gordon remained in the U.S. Navy Reserve until his honorable discharge in 1962 as a Lt. Commander.
From 1962 to 1995, he ran an internal medicine practice in Phoenix and earned several honors and awards, including the ACP Laureate Award.
