Candidates announced for Board of Governors Chair-elect

Two candidates are seeking election as Chair-elect Designee of the Board of Governors, with voting and results announced in late October.


Leslie F. Algase, MD, FACP, and Elisa I. Choi, MD, FACP, are seeking election as Chair-elect Designee of the Board of Governors. Governors will cast ballots in October, and the results will be announced later that month. The candidate elected will begin her term as Chair-elect at the conclusion of Internal Medicine Meeting 2021 and will take office as Chair in April 2022.

Dr. Algase is the Governor for ACP's New York Upstate Chapter. She has been a Fellow of the College since 2001. Dr. Algase has been active at the local level as a member of the Health and Public Policy Committee and as an attendee at the State Legislative Day. She was also the Rochester District Councilor for New York ACP. Under her leadership, the chapter received the Chapter Excellence Award in 2018 and 2019 (Gold Level under the new, tiered program) and Evergreen Awards in 2018 and 2020 (three Special Recognition Awards).

On the national level, Dr. Algase is currently serving on the Chapters Subcommittee and the ACP Task Force on Independent Practice and is a member of ACP Services PAC. Recently, she served as Class Representative on the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors in 2018-2019. She has also attended national ACP Leadership Days.

Dr. Algase received her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Rochester Associate Hospitals Program. She then served three years in the United States Air Force as a staff physician, leaving with the rank of major. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and has a qualification in geriatrics. She was in independent practice of primary care until 2018. Currently, Dr. Algase is practicing with the University of Rochester Primary Care Network and serves as site medical director.

Dr. Choi is the Governor for ACP's Massachusetts Chapter. She has been a Fellow of the College since 2012. Dr. Choi has been active at the local level as a member of the Governor's Council. She was also a member of the chapter's Awards Committee and Co-chair of its Health and Public Policy Committee. Under her leadership, the chapter received the Chapter Excellence Award in 2018 and 2019 (Gold Level under the new, tiered program), the Evergreen Award in 2018 and 2019, and a Special Recognition Evergreen Award in 2020.

On a national level, Dr. Choi is currently serving on the Governance Committee, Internal Medicine Scientific Program Committee, Volunteerism Committee, and Medical Informatics Committee. She is also a member of the American Medical Association House of Delegates. Recently, Dr. Choi served as a Class Representative on the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors in 2019-2020. She has also served as Vice-chair of the Awards Committee and was a member of the Infectious Disease Editorial Committee for MKSAP 17. Previously, Dr. Choi has served as a mentor on the Academic Advisory Board.

Dr. Choi received her medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, N.J. She completed her residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and infectious diseases and is a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. She holds a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School. Currently, Dr. Choi is chief of internal medicine at Atrius Health in Somerville, Mass., and practices in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and HIV medicine.
