ACP urges DHS to prioritize health of all U.S. residents

ACP strongly opposes the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) proposed changes to the public charge policy. ACP's concerns are detailed in comments provided to DHS.

ACP signed onto a coalition letter calling on DHS to recognize that the proposed rule would be detrimental to public health and the financial stability of families. ACP reaffirms that immigration policy should not interfere with the responsibility to care for patients and that health policy should not foster discrimination. ACP urges DHS to withdraw the proposed rule and make the health of all U.S. residents a priority.

ACP and #ThisIsOurLane

ACP's updated position paper on reducing firearm-related injury and deaths in the U.S. received major national attention and sparked the movement #ThisIsOurLane. In November 2018, the National Rifle Association (NRA) tweeted a link to an article opposing the policy, saying, “Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane.” ACP and Annals immediately responded, asserting that advocacy to reduce firearm injuries and deaths, like any other public health risk, is precisely in physicians' lane.

Reaction on Twitter was swift and overwhelmingly in support of ACP's policy, with ACP members and other physicians immediately declaring, “This IS my lane.” The hashtag #ThisIsOurLane is being used to call attention to the impact of firearms violence on patients. Nearly 1,000 additional physicians have signed a pledge on the Annals website, committing to talking to their patients about guns whenever risk factors are present.
