Submissions wanted for ACP Innovation Challenge 2019

ACP is accepting applications for its fourth “Shark Tank”-style competition, which will be held at Internal Medicine Meeting 2019 on April 13. Selected finalists will present their projects to a panel of judges in front of a live audience at the meeting. Participation in the challenge is open to ACP members only.

A Grand Prize winner will be selected by the judges and awarded $20,000 to support implementation/study of their idea. An Audience Choice prize of $5,000 will also be awarded by those watching the competition. All finalists will receive complimentary scientific program registration to Internal Medicine Meeting 2019.

The deadline for submitting applications is Nov. 30.

An October report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that unprecedented efforts are needed to have a chance at avoiding catastrophic effects from climate change in the near future.

ACP President Ana María López, MD, MPH, MACP, noted in a press release that physicians can help address the problem by advocating for climate change adaptation and mitigation policies and educating themselves about climate change and how it affects health, as well as their communities.

In a 2016 position paper, “Climate Change and Health,” published in Annals of Internal Medicine, ACP outlined the negative consequences of climate change. ACP has developed a Climate Change and Health Action Plan for physicians.

New Masters, awardees announced for 2018-2019

The Awards Committee is pleased to announce that the Board of Regents has approved individuals and institutions to receive College awards and Masterships during the 2019 Internal Medicine Meeting. A full list of awardees and new Masters is online.

Short-term insurance plans will increase premiums, harm patients

ACP has joined seven other medical societies in filing an amicus curiae brief in a lawsuit brought by the Association for Community Affiliated Plans against a recently issued rule on short-term insurance plans.

The amicus brief aligns with ACP's longstanding advocacy goal of ensuring that the country's health care system protects and provides for patients rather than taking away much-needed protections and resources. ACP is ready to work with Congress and the administration in finding ways to increase the accessibility and affordability of truly comprehensive health care coverage that supports the best health outcomes for our patients.
