William C. Waters III, MACP

William C. Waters III, MACP, a nephrologist, educator and writer, died on March 29, 2011 at the age of 81.

Dr. Waters received his medical degree from Emory Medical School and served as a faculty member at the school for many years. From 1970 to 2002, he practiced nephrology in the Piedmont Hospital complex, eventually joined in practice by his son, William C. Waters IV, FACP. During the 1960s, Dr. Waters was instrumental in the development of Atlanta's chronic renal dialysis program. During the 1970s and 80s, he led rounds with medical residents at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Waters was also a prolific writer. In addition to authoring papers on internal medical and nephrology topics and contributing chapters to a cardiology textbook, he published books for the general public, including a nonfiction book, “The Grand Disguise” about problems and solutions for medicine and a novel, “Before I Sleep,” detailing the activities and thoughts of an internist during 24 hours on call.

Dr. Waters became a Master of the College in 1996 and served as ACP Governor for Georgia in 1980-1984. Dr. Waters received his state's Laureate Award in 1988.
