Federal health care spending per capita, by state

The U.S. spends more than $2 trillion annually on health care, but public health experts debate where that money should go to produce better results. Federal, state and local spending can vary widely per capita (see Figure). And, federal spending is falling at a time when half of the states are facing reduced revenues that create budget shortfalls.
